ECA GROUP EURONAVAL conference: Seabed Warfare

Wednesday, October 07 2020
Nearly 40 years ago, most of the major maritime nations became aware of the Ocean Seabed’s economic, environmental and military stakes. The concern to maintain some control over their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) Seabed motivated these nations to conduct underwater explorations. However, these initiatives consisted mainly in scientific research campaigns, using human manned submarines. For the last ten years, Seabed interest drastically increased, probably because of the 450 undersea cables transiting 90% of the world’s information data. Furthermore, today, it is possible to survey and intervene with Underwater Unmanned Vehicles (UUV) on 6.000 meter deep Seabed. This might become routine operations for sovereign nations but also corporate companies in a near future. Which tools will nations have the option to rely on to monitor scientific and military intelligence in their Seabed EEZ?

Today, 99% of the world's information flow passes through the 450 submarine cables lying on the ocean floor. Monitoring the underwater communication to ensure the integrity of the data exchanged is thus an important issue, which will only increase over time and which will need to address effectively the dual requirements of scientific knowledge and military intelligence.

Whereas the deep sea was until recently difficult to access, we now need to understand this environment, monitor it and be able to intervene in it.

Some countries already have the capacity to reach such depths to intercept communications passing through these cables, other countries may want to adapt to the  ability of collecting this data and adopt technological advances available.

Our AUVs Dive Deep: 3000m

With its A18 AUV range, ECA Group has developed a family of AUVs as a best balance for compactness, endurance, performance, modularity, innovation and competitiveness. The A18 range, which covers depths up to 3000m, has an outstanding navigation accuracy and stability allowing to obtain high resolution images precisely georeferenced. Confirming that the A18 fulfils defence and security missions as well as missions for civil applications such as inspection or cartography, ECA Group recently delivered an A18D to a scientific player.

And Deeper… 6000m

ECA Group’s latest innovative AUV milestone is the ultra-deep water AUV. Designed and produced in collaboration with Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), this AUV features numerous new technologies to accomplish disruptive mission scenarios associating long range multi-sensor surveying with event-driven close-to-seafloor hovering for optical ground truthing and local inspection. Designed for exploration of the deep ocean, it operates down to 6000 meters’ ocean depth for up to 48 hours.
