Naval technology: ECA to supply steering console for ROK Navy’s third JIII-BI submarine
ECA Group is already scheduled to provide steering consoles for two of the Korean Navy (ROK) submarines for the Jangbogo III Batch I (JIII-BI) Submarine project.
The extra steering console will be supplied for installation on-board the third vessel as part of the latest batch.
The steering console is designed to have open and modular architecture to be adaptable to any submarine design. It is equipped with a high-performance numerical autopilot function enabling several control configurations, including automatic, manual and mixed modes.
DSME Shipyard was entrusted in 2014, to carry out the design of the JIII-BI project, as well as the development of the first two submarines. the very same company had also previously awarded a deal to ECA Group for the design and production of the first two vessels’ steering consoles.
The Korea Navy’s third submarine is currently being manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries for the JIII-BI initiative.
Jangbogo III, the Korean Attack Submarine programme, is a three-phase project that is intended to strengthen the ROK’s arsenal of attack submarines.
Each phase of the programme will see the construction of a total of three submarines for the ROK Navy.
The first vessel is slated to be launched next year and will be handed over to the navy at the end of 2020 following two years of sea trials.
The second submarine is due for delivery to the ROK at the end of 2022, while the hird expected to be handed over in 2029.
