ECA Group develops 2nd generation emergency locator transmitters with H2020 European aviation safety program

ECA Group is proud to be at the forefront of emerging technologies within the framework H2020 European aviation safety program and supporting the future of ever-evolving aviation safety services.

Pioneering innovation in beacons for aviation, ECA Group has taken a step further in the H2020 European aviation safety program. ECA Group, successfully experimented inflight tests of the first Cospas-Sarsat 2nd Generation ​ELT(DT).

The testing campaigns helped to evaluate the new capabilities in Search And Rescue (SAR) services and in particular the specific performances of the built-in Return Link Message as well as the ELT(DT) functions according to Global Aeronautical Distress & Safety System (ICAO GADSS) requirements on high speed aircraft. 

Within the framework of the GRICAS project (“Galileo MEOSAR RLS Improvement for Better Civil Aviation Security”), funded by GSA (European Global Navigation Satellites System Agency) through the Horizon 2020 program and coordinated by Thales Alenia Space, this new beacon has been successfully tested in-flight showing all the benefits of this solution for a safer aviation.

With its involvement in the project, ECA Group confirms its commitment in engineering the  ELT(DT) 2nd generation of Cospas-Sarsat modulation. This achievement means for all aircraft a whole range of advantages and benefits thanks to GALILEO constellation in the domain of in-flight activation beneficial to Search and Rescue operations:

  • Remote activation of the ELT through the GALILEO return link service
  • Implementation of automatic in-flight activation in case of distress situation identified on-board an aircraft, as per ED-237 EUROCAE (Minimum aviation system performance specification for criteria to detect in-flight aircraft distress events to trigger transmission of flight information)
  • Real-time detection and worldwide service thanks to Galileo system coverage
  • Improved independent location accuracy of the transmitting distress beacon (> 10 times more accurate than the independent location accuracy of the Cospas-Sarsat first generation beacon) 

On November 29th, 2017 successful flight tests were held in Aeropuerto de Sabadell (Spain) on-board a CESSNA 182, then in Toulouse Francazal airport (France) on-board a Falcon 20 provided by SAFIRE (French Service of Instrumented Aircraft for Environmental Research) on December 6th, 2017 which marked the successful completion of GRICAS project. 

The completion of this project strengthens ECA Group's position as a supplier of innovative 2nd generation beacon under the new Global Aeronautical Distress & Safety System [GADSS] perspectives.
